                  Creative Clwstwr

Where does creativity come from and why is it important to the economy and culture and identity of cities? And how can this be developed, supported and nurtured to build a strong and innovative cluster of creative industries businesses?

In 2014, Cardiff University formed the Creative Economy unit to better understand, engage and enable the creative economy in the region. Since then, South Wales has been part of global growth in the creative sector. The creative industries are now the fastest growing part of the UK economy, worth more than £100bn in GVA, with one in every 11 jobs a creative role. In Wales, Welsh Government data indicates that employment in the creative industries grew by close to 95% in the decade between 2006 and 2016.

Part of the unit’s remit was to establish a way for creative professionals to collaborate. In 2015, the Creative Cardiff network was founded and now has more than 2500 members from architects to animators, from those working in pottery to post-production. The aim of the network is to amplify job opportunities, help make connections between creatives through a series of events and encourage innovation across creative sectors.

At our June Breakfast Briefing, Director of Creative Economy Sara Pepper will share how in partnership with the city’s universities and industry partners the unit developed and won, a successful bid for Industrial Strategy funding through the highly competitive Creative Industries Cluster Programme.

The new initiative - Clwstwr - is a partnership with University of South Wales and Cardiff Metropolitan University and involves local and national government, strategic agencies and all major Welsh broadcasters. It is an ambitious collaboration, with and for, industry to make innovative new screen-related products, services and experiences aiming to result in economic uplift.
